PUBLIC HOUSING

  • Public Housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers Federal aid to HACW for residents at rents they can afford.

HUD furnishes technical and professional assistance in planning, developing and managing these units.

HACW public housing comes in various sizes of apartments and single family homes. Located in six wake county municipalities: apex, fuquay varina, garner, wake forest, wendell and zebulon.

HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER PROGRAM

One of the goals of WCHA is to increase the housing choices for the citizens of Wake County.

In accomplishing this, we have the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program also often referred to as Section 8.

The HCV Program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market.

Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing including single family homes, townhouses and apartments.

Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety as determined by the HACW.

Listed below are some special program vouchers depending on a family's eligibility:

Family Unification Program -

The purpose of the program is to promote family unification by providing housing assistance to families for whom the lack of adequate housing is a primary factor in the separation, or the threat of imminent separation of children from their families.

Mainstream Housing Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities, rental assistance is provided along with supportive services to enable very low-income households consisting of adults with disabilities to rent affordable private housing of their choice.

These persons also receive assistance in locating suitable accessible housing on the private market.

Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH).

This program combines HUD HCV rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by Veterans Affairs at its medical centers and in the community.

FAMILY SELF SUFFICIENCY (FSS) PROGRAM

  • Participation in the FSS program is voluntary for and is open to current housing choice voucher program participants.
  • The program is for participants that are unemployed or underemployed.
  • The objective of the program is to assist these families in obtaining employment that will allow them to become self-sufficient, that is, not dependent on welfare assistance.

HOME OWNERSHIP VOUCHER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

  • The HCV Home ownership Program of the Housing Authority permits eligible participants in the HCV Program, including participants with portable vouchers, the option of purchasing a home with their HCV assistance rather than renting.

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE) and GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

  • The Housing Authority for the County of Wake partners with Wake Tech in bringing the very first day time ABE/GED Program to Wake Forest.
  • This program is for students who want to improve reading, writing and math (ABE) and/or who want to complete a high school equivalency (GED) diploma.
  • Classes are held at the housing development's Community Center, located at 100 N. Allen road, wake forest, nc.

PATHS towards ACHIEVING SELF-SUFFICIENCY (PASS) PROGRAM

  • The Housing Authority of the County of Wake partners with Can I Live to make available the (PASS) Program.
  • This is a program designed for Section 8 and public housing residents to achieve economic independence and self sufficiency through education, job training, supportive services and employment.
  • With the support of local programs and agencies, PASS combines case management and life skills training with PASS participant's individual plan for education, training and employment.
